Resolution To Take Baby Steps
Happy New Year! I hope that you had fun last night. Making a resolution for the coming year while letting loose and shaking off the stress and bad memories of the year before. New Year’s Eve is the night that we celebrate the milestones and goals of the year while making new goals. We are following the traditions that began thousands of years before we were born. Goals that began with the Babylonians and the Romans.
Resolutions Are Hard
More than 50% of us make resolutions, yet, by February most of us have failed according to The Journal of Clinical Psychology. Resolutions are our attempt to reinvent ourselves. They are hard because we decide that on one day we are going to make a change. Without being truly ready to make big changes like losing weight, quitting smoking and other large changes that take more than an idea and a decision, big changes take planning, and they take a program. Big changes take more than big ideas.
Resolutions are hard because we believe that by making the change we have just resolved to make, our lives will then change in some magnificent way. We think, “If I lose weight I will find the person that will be my spouse.” Sadly, when the weight is lost and that person we were looking for is not found fast there is frustration, we feel like a failure. We may as well go back to our bad habit because the new habit did not change a thing.
Attainable Goals: Baby Steps
If our goal is, truly, to reinvent ourselves, it is easier to make smaller attainable goals. It is all about baby steps. Reaching, and sticking to small goals allows us to stack these new skills and changes, one on top of the other throughout the year.
Or, at least that is what I think.
This idea got me to do something I never do. I made a craft, and trust me, I am not a crafter, not even close to being a crafter. You will see.
You may have heard that it takes 21 days to create a new habit. That research has been debunked by several studies. Still, I believe in my heart-of-hearts that if I start something very simple at the first I will be able to build 12 new skills by the end of 2017.

When I decided to take on my baby steps project I needed a vehicle. I needed a method of handing out a monthly goal. Each month I will start a new goal without stopping the goal I began the month before. The goals are things I either want or need to do. “Read a book a week”, “Take a walk every day”, “Eat at one new restaurant a week”, and so on.
I typed each goal into a spreadsheet and made the cells large enough to cut them out and fold them into decent-sized slips of paper.
I used a mason jar. I decorated the jar with a label showing the year. I added a ribbon, and glitter as well as other bobbles. Trust me, for someone who does not craft this not was difficult.
I do not know how this will work out. Some of these goals are easy and may only take a day or two, but which day or two will I accomplish the goal? I hope I will do better than the 50% resolution completion rate!
Will I continue the first goal as I complete the second goal, and so on?
I hope so. And, as the year comes to an end I hope to report to you that this worked. As for now, I need to get rid of some clothes, shoes, and other things. Oddly, something I was going to do today anyway! I have done this a few times over the last couple of years so it should be easy.
